The oral interview is an important step in the application process. Applicants qualify for interviews after submitting the required documents, completing an initial meeting, and passing the aptitude test.
Interview Preparation
The interview questions are designed to identify aptitude in potential apprentices. To better prepare for the interview, applicants can make a list of jobs they have had, special projects that they have worked on at school or at home, and extracurricular activities they have participated in. Applicants should be prepared to discuss their past work and/or school experiences, hobbies and interests, and have a knowledge of the JATC and how it works.
The Committee
Applicants will be interviewed by a committee composed of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).
The Committee members are highly experienced electrical professionals. They are aware of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics that individuals need to be successful electrical workers.
The interview team usually consists of six (6) committee members. Each Committee member will take turns asking you questions during the interview.
Interview Time
Most interviews take approximately 20 minutes. This is a short amount of time so it is recommended applicants are prepared to give complete, concise and thoughtful answers, and keep to the topic; avoid straying into irrelevant subjects.
After the Interview
After the interview, applicants will receive a letter from the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) informing them of the decision. If accepted, applicants will need to respond in acceptance of the position being offered.
